Buildings, streets or landscapes have been a favorite photo motif for me on every trip and on every excursion or city trip, and like everyone else, there are tons of digital images on drives and hard drives.
Always looking for the perfect motif
But since I discovered painting for myself, my approach to photography has changed fundamentally. Instead of just taking photos, I am now looking for the perfect motif for my paintings. I look at the world around me through the eyes of an artist who wants to capture the beauty and uniqueness of each subject.
It’s fascinating to experience how my perspective has changed. I now take more time to explore different angles and crops. I often take dozens of photos from different perspectives, looking for the best composition, the perfect play of light and shadow.
But the beauty of painting is that I can change and adjust everything on the canvas as I please. A construction fence at the edge of the picture, which is disturbing in the photo, can become an abstract form in my painting or even disappear completely. I have the freedom to realize my artistic vision and design the motif to reflect my personal perception and interpretation.
Palma de Mallorca: A Paradise of inspiration
A perfect example of this is my recent trip to Palma de Mallorca. The picturesque streets and fascinating architecture offered me an endless number of motifs. As I explored the city, I took countless photos of the charming streets, the impressive buildings, and the breathtaking views of the sea.
But once I had my canvas in front of me, I realized that I didn’t just want to create a copy of my photographs. I wanted to capture the special, the uniqueness of these snapshots and at the same time bring in my own artistic perspective.
So I started studying the motifs and filtering out their essential elements. I focused on the play of light, the shades, and the colour palette that makes these places so unique. The people on the streets became colourful brushstrokes representing the life and energy of the city.
It was a challenge to bring this atmosphere and mood to life on my canvas. But with every stroke of the brush and every mix of colors I felt closer to creating my personal interpretation of this special place.
Finally, after many hours of dedication and experimentation, my painting was in front of me. It was a reflection of my own perception and fascination with Palma de Mallorca. Every line told a story, and every detail was carefully worked out.
Painting has taken my travels to a new level.
