On every trip or city break, buildings, streets or landscapes have been a favourite photo motif for me, and, as with everyone, there are vast quantities of digital images on drives and hard drives, etc. I’ve never been able to take a picture of a building, street, or landscape.
Always looking for the perfect motif
But since I discovered painting for myself, my approach to photography has changed fundamentally. Instead of simply taking photos, I am now on the lookout for the perfect subject for my paintings. I look at the world around me through the eyes of an artist who wants to capture the beauty and uniqueness of each subject.
It is fascinating to experience how my perspective has changed. I now take more time to explore different angles and cropping. I often take dozens of photos from different perspectives, looking for the best composition, the perfect play of light and shadow.
But the beauty of painting is that I can change and adapt everything on the canvas as I please. A construction fence at the edge of the painting that looks disturbing in the photo can become an abstract form or even disappear completely in my painting. I have the freedom to realize my artistic vision and shape the motif to reflect my personal perception and interpretation.
